Recreational Fishing Grants To Enhance Industry

Applicationswill open tomorrow for the $1 million NT Recreational Fishing Grants Scheme,which is designed to create new recreational fishing opportunities across theTerritory.

Grantsof up to $100,000 are available for Territory-based, not-for-profitorganisations to implement projects that will help grow and supportrecreational fishing in the NT.

The scheme is part of the Governments $50 million investment inrecreational fishing, which is supporting the growth of the sector to createjobs.

Potentialprojects that could be eligible for funding include:

  • Infrastructuresuch as fishing camps, shelters and amenities that will encourage greateraccess to new recreational fishing opportunities

  • Fishingplatforms, shelters, seats and structures at land-based fishing locations andboat ramps

  • Fishcleaning and wash-down facilities

  • Best-practicerecreational fishing education programs

  • Fishhabitat restoration

  • Capacitybuilding programs such as fish tagging and research

  • Fishingfamily days, clinics, and events

In 2018 the Amateur Fishermens Association of theNorthern Territory successfully applied for three grants, which helped open upaccess to a new fishing spot near Katherine.

Other successful applicants last year includedDarwin Game Fishing Club, Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club, PalmerstonGame Fishing Club and Rapid Creek Landcare Group Inc.
