Tourism at Red Rock Reserve near Coffs Harbour has been given a boost following a major revamp of a headland walkway on a Crown land reserve with the support of the NSW Government.
The upgrade by Reflections Holiday Parks was supported with a $32,000 grant by the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund to restore a much-loved icon to its former glory.
Reflections Holiday Parks manages 37 holiday parks and 42 public recreation reserves on Crown land, including Red Rock Holiday Park and the associated reserve on the mouth of the Corindi River and at the southern end of Yuraygir National Park.
The walkway revamp included:
- Cutting back overgrown vegetation for a clearer and safer path
- Removal of rotted timber slats and repairs to damaged bearers
- Installation of a non-slip ‘Envirowalk mesh’ with safety stair nosing at the steps
- Vegetation management by Red Rock Landcare.
Reflections Mid North Coast Operations Manager Allan Thomas said the involvement of local Landcare and the Red Rock Preservation Association was invaluable to drive the project home.
“The previous hardwood track was at its end of life and the government funding allowed this popular walkway to be restored and used again by the local community and visitors to the park,” Mr Thomas said.
“Reconstruct contractors were engaged to undertake this work for us and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results and the quick turnaround to completion.”
Red Rock Preservation Association and Landcare Representative Les Windsor said local volunteers, who are passionate about the reserve, worked with Reflections on the walkway and vegetation work.
“The Red Rock Landcare Group has a working bee at the Reserve every Tuesday, and we take pride in this natural picturesque landscape that people visit for a laid-back vacation escape.”
Reflections Holiday Parks Red Rock Manager Geoff Wruck said guests had been really excited with the major repairs made to the walkway with hundreds using it to view the headland since it was completed last month.
“It takes a slow and steady 10-15 minutes to complete the walk from the park to the headland with people rewarded by stupendous views of the coast once they finish.”
Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh said the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund had supported a much safer and enjoyable walking experience to the headland.
“In many cases, important community projects such as the Red Rock Walkway repairs would not happen without state funding which significantly contributes to NSW’s cultural, sporting and recreational life,” Mr Singh said.
