Relationships matter: how CEMI is helping Cornell work as one

Relationships matter.

That simple idea set the tone for CEMI’s Fall Town Hall, where university leaders explored how unified systems, trusted data, automation, and continuous improvement can help Cornell work more effectively as one institution. As CEMI Implementation Manager Steve Kish reminded attendees, “Although we work in information technology, we’re really not in the technology business, we’re in the people business.” Throughout the discussion, speakers returned to a common theme: modernization is not just about technology, but about better supporting the people and partnerships that advance Cornell’s mission.

Provost Kavita Bala highlighted the importance of preparing Cornell for an increasingly complex and unpredictable future. As the university continues to strengthen its One Cornell approach, unified administrative systems and trusted data will help leaders make decisions more quickly, collaborate more effectively, and respond to emerging opportunities and challenges. Speakers also emphasized that modernization is an ongoing journey, one that requires continuous improvement rather than a one-time technology implementation.

The town hall also showcased progress across major initiatives, including efforts to create a more complete view of constituent engagement, streamline administrative work, and strengthen integration across systems. Updated CEMI goals focus on administrative excellence, trusted data, automation and AI, sustainable foundations, effective governance, and a more seamless Cornell experience. Together, these efforts aim to reduce the time spent navigating fragmented processes and increase the time available for teaching, research, outreach, patient care, and engagement.
