Department staff in delegation to high-level assembly

Some of our staff formed part of the Australian delegation to the 6th Session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-6).

Held in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEA-6 welcomed more than 5,500 representatives from 180 countries to address the triple planetary crises of:

  • climate change
  • biodiversity loss
  • pollution and waste.

Jenny Da Rin led the Australian delegation as High Commissioner to Kenya and our Permanent Representative to UNEP.

UN member countries agreed 15 resolutions on critical issues at UNEA-6. These included ocean health, water resource management, sustainable lifestyles, and land degradation.

Our work at the assembly involved:

  • supporting a resolution introduced by Ukraine about the environmental impact of armed conflict
  • drawing attention to the importance of negotiating an ambitious Global Plastics Treaty.

UN research shows this work is becoming more urgent, with:

  • global temperatures hitting record highs in 2023
  • hundreds of thousands of species facing extinction
  • millions of people losing their lives to pollution every year.

Through our Nature Positive work, Australia is focussed on re-establishing itself as a global leader on the environment.

We are committed to delivering an ambitious environment and climate agenda, at home and abroad, to achieve a net-zero and nature-positive world.

As the world’s leading forum for the environment, UNEA provides a unique forum for collective environmental action. Australia welcomes the strong environmental outcomes from UNEA-6.
