Residents invited to provide feedback on concept plan for Harold Phillips Park

A concept plan including potential new uses and open space designs for Garbutt’s Harold Phillips Park is complete, with residents now invited to have their say on the proposal.

The concept plan will guide the long-term development of the area, including the construction of a brand new skatepark funded by the Palaszczuk Government.

Townsville City Council Community and Cultural Development Committee and divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said this project would transform Harold Phillips Park into a space for youth.

“Council has been working closely with a steering committee and a variety of stakeholders to develop this concept plan for Harold Phillips Park and now we want the wider community to share their feedback,” Cr Greaney said.

“We want the young people in the area to be able to utilise and enjoy this space as best as possible, which is why we’re trying to maximise the area with playing fields, the new skatepark and green areas.

“The consultation will remain open until 10 December, and I’d really encourage everyone to jump onto Have Your Say Townsville and send through feedback on the concept plan because it will guide the development of the park.”

The concept plan includes connections to other open spaces in the area, the proposed locations of two sporting fields, dog parks, and varying locations of the skatepark.

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said it was great to see the next stage of work begin at Harold Phillips Park.

“This was an election commitment, and it is being delivered right now,” Mr Stewart said.

“Projects like this help create jobs, which is important to the Palaszczuk Government’s Covid-19 Economic Recovery Plan here in the North.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s $1 million election commitment to invest in a new skatepark and masterplan for the park will help keep the heart of Townsville pumping.

“We’re also kicking goals for the Garbutt Magpies with another $1 million for an upgrade to the Magpies clubhouse, new change rooms and new field lighting.”

Director of the Garbutt Magpies Club Randal Ross said he’s excited to see the concept plan come to life and revitalise Harold Phillips Park.

“I think it’s a positive step in the right direction for the whole community. We need to ensure we have facilities that can cater for residents,” Mr Ross said.

“The Garbutt Magpies and Garbutt Bombers have been working within the space for a long time to build the foundation for the future generations to enjoy all sports, and the concept plan will allow us to continue this work.

“It’s an exciting concept and we’re really appreciative for the support from the Queensland Government and Council. It’s fantastic to see everyone working together for the benefit of the community.”

Cr Greaney said the concept plan aims to revitalise the park by providing multiple uses to the community.

“Harold Phillips Park is located in a growing part of Townsville, on the back of new housing, and it’s important that we think long-term about how the space is utilised,” she said.

“We want this space to be family friendly and to incorporate the cultural heritage of the area, as well as being a place for young people to connect and be active.

“I’m looking forward to hearing the feedback from the community and getting the construction of the new skatepark off the ground.”

Residents are also invited to attend Harold Phillips Park on Saturday 27 November 2021 from 11am to 1pm for an on-site consultation.
