Western Australia has recorded one new case of COVID-19 in the community overnight, a traveller from Queensland.
As a result, restrictions will come into effect for the Perth-Peel region at 6pm tonight (December 23) until 6am Tuesday, December 28, 2021.
These public health and social measures include:
- Mandatory mask wearing for all public indoor settings and on public transport;
- Certain high-risk large-scale events will be cancelled and nightclubs will be closed, and dancing is banned except for weddings; and
- Anyone who has been in Perth and Peel since December 16 and enters another regional area is required to wear a mask as per requirements in Perth-Peel. Travel to remote Aboriginal communities remain restricted.
All these measures will be reviewed regularly and the Chief Health Officer will continue to monitor the serious situation and provide more ongoing advice. Visit https://www.wa.gov.au for further information.
The Department of Health is working through the case and is in the process of identifying close and casual contacts, and locations visited.
People are asked to check the exposure sites list regularly and monitor their health and get tested immediately and self-quarantine, if they develop symptoms.
If you have visited an exposure site during the times listed below, you are required to follow the corresponding health advice issued for that location.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
“This is a very concerning situation and over the next few days it is more important than ever for the WA community to follow the health advice and do everything we can to minimise community spread.
“The individual involved has visited a number of locations including nightclubs and events with hundreds of people.
“We’ve done it before, the WA community has banded together at difficult times like this, and we’ve seen it through together.
“We cannot be complacent, and we need to take every precaution we can which is why these public health and social measures are so crucial in protecting us.
“As the situation develops it is incredibly important we do what we know best, maintain physical distancing and personal hygiene and get tested if you develop symptoms.
“I know this is frustrating, however we need to do everything we can to limit the spread and we’re all counting on one another to do the right thing in the coming days.”
As stated by Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:
“These are short-term measures to monitor the situation and reduce the risk of community spread.
“We are asking anyone who has been to any of the exposure sites to please get tested and isolate until you return a negative result.
“This case is a reminder for every eligible Western Australian to get vaccinated and anyone who is due their third dose to book immediately.”
