Riding right path forward with track creation – Wollongong

Detailed design and construction work is set to begin on the early stages of the Cringila Hills Masterplan, with Council accepting the tender to begin work on mountain bike and walking trails in the area at tonight’s Council meeting.

The design phase of work will start shortly and focus on planning for approximately 11.5km of mountain bike trails and approximately 3.1km of walking trails. Early next year, construction will start on the bike trails and enhanced informal walking trail network. It’ll be the first stage of works, that are captured in the site’s long term plan.

“I know there are going to be some very happy people in our community to know that this is moving forward,” Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“Ever since Council adopted the Masterplan for the site, we’ve had people keen to see work get underway. Well, we’re delivering on that promise. Between now and the end of the year, the design work will be a key focus of Council and then early next year work will begin on site.

“It’s an exciting time for the area, over the coming months the trails will be brought to life, surrounded by a wonderful greenspace, for riders of all levels to enjoy.”

The mountain bike trails will cater for a variety of skill sets catering for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders.

The overall Masterplan for Cringila Hills also includes a pump track, mountain bike skills track, playground, car parking and other associated facilities supporting the use of the site. These works will be staged and delivered separately to the mountain bike and walking trail works over the course of the Masterplan’s development.

“This is a fantastic example of Council developing a vacant site into a multi-purpose space that will provide outdoor recreational opportunities for many people within our community and beyond,” Cr Bradbery said.

“The Cringila Hills project is part of a greater activation plan to provide diverse recreational and social opportunities for the people of Wollongong.”

The full scope of work to the area for this project will include weed management, revegetation of part of the trail corridor, installation of trail and wayfinding signage around the local area to the site, as well as management of some wastes as a result of illegal dumping in the area.
