Nitrogen is a nutrient naturally present in low concentrations in rivers. Elevated nitrogen levels can promote excessive plant and algal growth, affecting river ecosystems.
We report on measured and modelled nitrogen concentrations in three forms (nitrate-nitrite-nitrogen, ammoniacal nitrogen, and total nitrogen) in Aotearoa New Zealand’s river water and how they change over time.
River water quality in New Zealand is described using six indicators: clarity and turbidity, Escherichia coli, heavy metals, macroinvertebrate community index, nitrogen, and phosphorus.
