Road and bridge upgrades underway to improve community safety

Two major road and bridge upgrades are underway within Northern Grampians Shire, which will increase community safety for road users in both Logan near St Arnaud, and Great Western.

Two bridges on Scollary Road in Logan will have works undertaken from today until late October, with speed restrictions in place throughout the duration of the project.

Access across both bridges will still be available over this time, however, from late October to late November, the bridges will be closed and detours will be in place.

The bridges are being upgraded to better support the increased levels of agricultural traffic in the area, with widening and new guardrails being installed.

Intersection safety works will also take place at the corner of Scollary/Rinaldi Roads.

The total cost of this project is just over $1 million, with $687,000 coming from Agriculture Victoria’s Local Roads to Market program, $273,500 coming from council, and $70,000 coming from the adjacent Loddon Shire Council.

The full length of Cobeys Creek Road and 700m of St Georges Road in Great Western will be turned from a gravel road into a sealed road, and will be completed by late September pending weather conditions.

The project received $245,000 in funding from Regional Roads Victoria’s Fixing Country Roads program, which council matched with a further $245,000 in funding.

Kara Kara Ward Councillor, Tony Driscoll said, “Our ratepayers have been yearning for upgrades to these roads, and given the increase in usage these particular roads and bridges have become a priority.”

“We’ve been able to secure funding for these projects which will help increase not only the safety on these roads, but also make them more efficient for us to maintain in the future as well.”
