Leeton Shire Council is pleased to announce the continuation of its significant road rehabilitation project on Canal St. With works scheduled to recommence in two weeks (from 14 August 2023), the project aims to upgrade the road infrastructure, ensuring a smoother and safer commute not just for the community but also heavy vehicles, such as road trains and trucks, that frequently use this road.

The rehabilitation project on Canal St is scheduled to run until mid-December. During this period, Council will be undertaking extensive measures to enhance the road conditions which involves digging out and replacing the old road and substituting it with a new, high-quality surface. While it can’t be completely avoided, Council will endeavour to keep dust pollution to a minimum.

Untitled-1.png Council kindly reminds the community not to park on the service lane during the day from 7.00am to 5.00pm, notably between Irrigation Way/Wamoon Ave intersection and Market Road (see image). This will help with construction activities and maintaining a safe environment for all road users.

The rehabilitation project on Canal St has been carefully planned to avoid any total road closures. Instead, Council will implement effective traffic control measures to ensure a continuous flow of traffic in both directions. Drivers are urged to follow the guidance provided by traffic lights and traffic controllers for the safety of everyone.

The project kicked off in late April with the first stage of roadworks completed up to Calrose Street. This included the completion of a prime seal in mid-June 2023 which provided waterproofing in preparation for asphalt and potential wet weather during winter.

Mayor Cr Tony Reneker is pleased to see works recommence on Canal St.

“We appreciate the understanding and patience of our community during this essential road rehabilitation,” expressed Mayor Reneker. “Upon completion, Canal St will witness significant improvements, allowing for a more comfortable and secure journey for all. Thanks to the improved road surface, residents will also benefit from less road noise.”

The full project value is $2.07M which is funded through NSW Government’s “Fixing Local Roads – Round Three” program with $307k contributed by Council.
