As part of Transport for NSW’s Safer Roads Program, Ballina Shire Council is undertaking a suite of road safety upgrades on Ross Lane and Byron Bay Road to improve safety for motorists and cyclists.
The existing sealed shoulder and clear zone widths (vehicle runoff areas free of obstructions) are less than desirable and have contributed to a poor vehicle collision history on the route.
The works will include:
- shoulder widening
- clear zone improvements
- chevron alignment markers
- improved curve signage
- non-skid road surface treatments
- superelevation curve improvements
- painted and raised median
Stage 1 works on Byron Bay Road are now complete. Stage 1 works on the eastern end of Ross Lane are underway and are expected to be complete by November 2022 (weather and site conditions permitting).
During this time the following traffic changes will be in place:
- speed limit will be reduced to 40km/hr in construction zones
- two-way traffic will be maintained where possible
- single lane closures will occur during resealing works with traffic controllers in place.

Stage 2 works will follow completion of Stage 1 and are expected to be completed by mid-2023.
Stage 3 works will follow Stage 2 and require finalisation of flood mitigation options and further funding.
