Robbery with violence at Southport, QLD

Police have charged a man following an alleged road-rage incident at Southport on Monday, February 11.

Around 9.17am, a 39-year-old man was driving south along Olsen Avenue, approaching the intersection of Crestwood Drive, when it’s alleged he was cut-off by another vehicle.

The two vehicles have then stopped for a red-light at the intersection, where it’s alleged a man exited his vehicle and approached the 39-year-old’s driver’s-side window, where they engaged in a verbal altercation. The light turned green and the man returned to his car.

The two vehicles drove for approximately 100 metres, before the man allegedly stopped his vehicle in the moving lane, forcing the 39-year-old to come to a halt behind him.

It’s alleged that the driver again approached the 39-year-old’s vehicle and engaged in a second verbal altercation, before attempting to break his side-mirror and reaching inside the vehicle, stealing his dash-camera. The man has then run back to his car and jumped into the passenger seat.

The 39-year-old exited his car and approached the man’s vehicle where he asked for his dash camera back. When the man allegedly refused, the 39-year-old removed the man’s car-keys from the ignition and asked for the return of his dash-camera in exchange for the keys.

It’s alleged that the man then punched the 39-year-old multiple times to the face with both first, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the road, before fleeing in his vehicle.

The 39-year-old sustained facial bruising and a lacerated lip and was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Yesterday, detectives executed a search warrant at a Benowa address where they arrested a 29-year-old Benowa man.

He has now been charged with one count each of robbery, wilful damage and possessing a restricted drug and two counts of possessing dangerous drugs.

He is scheduled to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court today, Monday March 4.
