Rural and regional community advocate Robbie Sefton has been appointed to the board of Australia’s lead management agency for the Great Barrier Reef, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley announced Ms Sefton’s appointment to the seven-member board for a five-year term, commencing this month.

The Board oversees the conservation and management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park through the Authority which works with Federal and State Governments, tourism operators, marine scientists, traditional owners and a wide range of organisations.

Minister Ley welcomed the appointment and the broad-ranging skills and experience Ms Sefton brings to the Authority.

“Ms Sefton will provide a valuable contribution to the Authority, drawing on her extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, natural resource management and strategic communications,” Ms Ley said.

“As a member of numerous government, business and not-for-profit boards and advisory groups, her vast experience in dealing with complex challenges in her previous roles will add to the Board’s abilities to meet growing challenges facing the Reef.”

GBRMPA Chair Dr Ian Poiner said he looked forward to working with the Authority’s newest board member.

“The Great Barrier Reef is an iconic and complex natural area and we welcome a broad range of perspectives and experiences on marine science, threats to the Reef, and the industries and communities that depend on the Reef,” he said.
