Dancing of a different kind comes to the Butterbox Theatre on Friday, September 9 as crooners Tim ‘Mac’ McCallum and Tony ‘Dee’ Doevendans put their spin – literally – on some cabaret classics.
The talented duo, both wheelchair users, will perform the works of Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé and Nat King Cole as they ‘swing’ across the stage.
Swinging & Spinning, which premiered to a near sold-out crowd at the 2021 Undercover Artists Festival in Brisbane, will appear at the City of Logan’s Butterbox during National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week.
City Lifestyle Chair Councillor Laurie Koranski said it was a privilege to host the upbeat show at the theatre, which was designed to welcome people of all abilities.
“This will be another fantastic performance at our Butterbox Theatre, which has featured a variety of acts since opening earlier this year,” Cr Koranski said.
“We want stories of every kind to be told on this stage, and performed for audiences from all backgrounds.
“Most importantly, the show will be wheelchair accessible and Auslan interpreted, to ensure that everyone has the chance to be inspired by these talented performers.”
Mac, who is also the show’s writer and director, said the performance would take audiences on a nostalgic journey through their favourite tunes and share an important inclusion message.
His personal highlight is performing the Sammy Davis Jr. hit, I’ve Gotta Be Me.
“The lyrics of that song typify the motivating attitudes that those of us with disabilities find within ourselves,” Mac said.
“I get a lot of strength from performing a song like that and hope that the message it sends to the audience is the same.”
He said the Swinging & Spinning cast, which includes ballroom dancers Sue Gillingham and Dane Berry and Auslan interpreter Steve Waddell, was excited to perform at the Butterbox.
“The minute I wheeled into the foyer, I just knew that it was going to be a perfect home for our show,” Mac said.
“It’s a great theatre, it’s a great location, it has wonderful accessible features and we’ve felt nothing but welcomed.”
