The Regional Universities Network (RUN) welcomes the release of the National Regional, Rural and Remote Tertiary Education Strategy by the Minister for Education, The Hon Dan Tehan MP.
The Chair of RUN, Professor Helen Bartlett, said that she was delighted that the Government had accepted the aims of the seven key recommendations.
“The Hon Dr Denis Napthine’s review report provides a vision for tertiary education in regional, rural and remote (RRR) Australia, with practical and focussed actions to implement the strategy,” Professor Bartlett said.
“RRR students, communities and tertiary education providers will benefit from the proposed, place-based strategy.
“RUN has consistently advocated for the issues addressed in the review’s key recommendations, namely: improving access to tertiary study options in regional areas, including through more places for regional campuses; assisting RRR students with financial and other support; and strengthening the role of tertiary education providers in regional development.
“We are pleased that the review has advocated that a RRR Education Commissioner should coordinate the implementation of the review recommendations,” Professor Bartlett said.
“We thank the review panel and Minister for this review report, and look forward to working with the Minister and an RRR Education Commissioner in developing an implementation plan.”
