Runners make great strides for dementia awareness

Four University of Tasmania researchers have raised over $10,000 in funds for dementia research as part of RUN for the ISLAND.

Runners – Eddy Hill, Jess Collins, Josh Eastgate and James Brady – tackled the 480-kilometre Tasmanian Trail in five days in a bid to raise awareness and funds for dementia research.

The team left Devonport on Saturday (December 17), running the trail through the heart of Tasmania and completing the final leg to Dover on December 22.

As part of the initiative, they stopped at regional centres along the trail to promote health and wellbeing factors recognised at reducing dementia risk.

The run is helping to support the ISLAND Project, which is run by the University’s Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre.

The ISLAND Project is the largest dementia study of its kind in the world with the research program targeting a whole population (the population of Tasmania) through a public health campaign. Tasmania has the oldest population in the country, and age is the biggest risk factor for dementia.
