Safe quarantine-free travel from QLD permitted, starts 12.01am Friday

  • From 12.01am Friday (October 22) Queensland is set to transition to ‘very low risk’ category
  • Chief Health Officer will continue to monitor COVID-19 situation in Queensland and border controls will strengthen quickly, if necessary
  • Cautious and careful approach, based on latest health advice, keeps WA safe
  • Quarantine-free travel is now permitted from Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and Queensland
  • Following the latest public health advice, Western Australia’s controlled interstate border is set to be safely adjusted, pending no further outbreaks, with quarantine-free travel from Queensland to be permitted from 12.01am Friday, October 22.

    For almost two months, travel has been allowed from QLD without approval, but 14 days of self-quarantine has been required. Queensland has now gone 19 days without community transmission.

    From 12.01am Friday (October 22), Queensland will safely transition from ‘low risk’ to ‘very low risk’. Under the ‘very low risk’ settings, safe travel is permitted into WA subject to the following conditions:

    • completion of a G2G Pass declaration before travel, stipulating the traveller does not have any COVID-19 symptoms and which jurisdictions they have visited in the previous 14 days;
    • all Perth Airport arrivals to undergo a health screening;
    • travellers to be prepared to take a COVID-19 test, if deemed necessary by a health clinician (voluntary asymptomatic testing also available); and
    • land arrivals to be met at the border checkpoint for a health screening and to have their G2G Pass declaration checked.

    The Australia Capital Territory is a ‘medium risk’ jurisdiction, while Victoria and New South Wales are both classified as ‘extreme risk’ jurisdictions.

    More information on WA’s controlled border is available at https://www.wa.gov.au.

    As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

    “WA has a controlled border in place on health advice to protect the health of Western Australians.

    “Following no community transmission in Queensland for 19 days, the Chief Health Officer has advised that Queensland can safely transition to ‘very low risk’.

    “The Chief Health Officer will closely monitor the COVID-19 situation in Queensland and should border controls need to be strengthened quickly, we will not hesitate.

    “WA’s border controls with ACT, NSW and Victoria remain in place.

    “My Government’s priority continues to be to get as many people vaccinated as possible to reach high levels of vaccinations that will help keep the WA community safe.”

    As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:

    “Western Australia continues to adopt a safe and sensible approach to dealing with COVID-19 on the advice of the Chief Health Officer.

    “This strategy has enabled WA to live a relatively free lifestyle for a long time.

    “It has also seen our economy prosper to benefit the rest of Australia.

    “We have not had to endure long lockdowns, hundreds of deaths, tens of thousands of positive cases, business shutdowns and closed schools like NSW and Victoria in their most recent devastating outbreak.

    “It is pleasing we can now ease border controls again with Queensland.

    “Now we need Western Australians to continue to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

    “Don’t hesitate before it’s too late.”
