The Safeguard Mechanism is part of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007. It places legislated emissions limits, known as baselines, on Australia’s largest emitters.
We are consulting on a proposed amendment to the Safeguard Mechanism that will affect landfill facilities covered by the Safeguard Mechanism.
Landfill facilities can use a formula to set their emissions baseline. The amendment will insert a prescribed landfill gas capture efficiency rate into the formula.
