Creating a connected world is more than just ensuring that we have strong internet connectivity in our towns and rural areas. It is about providing quality transport infrastructure to enable people and goods to move faster and more safely to their destination. In the first half of 2020/21, Council has completed over $2.3m in roadworks.
During the July – December period Council has completed the new bitumen seal of 4.5 kilometres of Glen Davis Road through the provision of federal Local Roads and Community Infrastructure funding; sealed Hartley Vale Road and Dark Corner Road using state Fixing Local Roads Programs and the sealed Fields Road, Hartley. All works were completed by Council day labour, ensuring that our employees continue to perform work that directly benefits our urban and rural communities during this particularly challenging time.
Through the second half of 2020/21, the community can expect Council to double down on the projects identified in the 2020/21 Operational Plan. Many projects have already commenced such as:
- the sealing of 11 kilometres of Glen Alice Road,
- the sealing of 3 kilometres of Back Cullen Road
- renewal of Old Western Road, Rydal, Purchas Street Lane, Quarry Road and Creek Street.
- Reseal of Wolgan Street Lane, Thompson Street, Crossing Street and Long Street.
Reseal of West Street, Littleton is scheduled to commence in March with bitumen seal of Walker Street, Hartley scheduled to commence in April.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Council has had to implement austerity measures resulting in the difficult decision to postpone some projects. However, Council is making every possible effort to offset these deferrals by sourcing external funding from the state and federal governments with the view to improving the sustainability of the organisation while also continuing to deliver high-quality assets to the community. We look forward to the next 6 months and the opportunities for change and improvement that this will bring.
