As the nation reflects on the extraordinary year and achievements made by its people, entries for the prestigious Georges River Council Australia Day Awards are now open for nominations, by 4.00pm, Tuesday 30 November 2021.
In its fifth year, the Awards recognise and honour outstanding individuals who have significantly contributed to the local community in the areas of sports, environment, arts and culture.
Local heroes will be recognised in the official award ceremony on Australia Day, 26 January 2022 where winners will be announced.
An overall Citizen of the Year will be selected from the five categories of Awards, including young citizen, volunteer, sportsperson, green advocate, plus an Arts and Cultural Award.
Georges River Council’s General Manager Gail Connolly said as the Awards broadened its categories year by year, we see a range of entries from across the area.
“Despite the challenges we faced over the past 12 months, Australians continue to make efforts to better our community.
“We would like to celebrate these accomplishments as a level of government that is closest to its people.”
Colin Campbell, Citizen of the Year 2021 for his volunteering and dedication in military music training, said, “It was a great honour to be nominated by my friends and chosen to receive Citizen and Volunteer of the year awards.
“Although impeded by COVID, it has enabled me to meet with other awardees and learn of some of the wonderful projects happening in our area.
“I look forward to seeing the nominations for the 2022 awards and to discover the variety of their achievements.”
