Serious single – vehicle crash at Wollongong, NSW

A motor vehicle crash in the state’s Illawarra region has left a driver seriously injured.

Just before 9pm yesterday (Wednesday 10 August 2022), emergency services responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash on the M1 Motorway, between Northcliff Drive and Five Islands Road, Berkeley.

Police have been told a black Subaru Forrester was traveling north when it left the roadway, crashing into a tree, trapping the driver and sole occupant.

Witnesses stopped to render assistance, before officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District and NSW Ambulance arrived.

The driver – a man aged 23 – was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for serious head injuries, before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.

Police established a crime scene as an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident commenced.
