National higher education regulator the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), has renewed the University of Tasmania’s registration for the maximum period of seven years until September 2026.
TEQSA routinely reviews and accredits all Australian higher education providers and its decision was based on an application for renewal lodged by the University in May last year.
University Provost Professor Jane Long welcomed TEQSA’s decision.
“Securing the maximum seven-year accreditation reflects our commitment to excellence in both our teaching and research endeavour,” Professor Long said.
Professor Long said TEQSA’s notice of decision recognises areas of institutional importance to the University, including:
- a commitment to access and social equity for Tasmanians, consistent with its social mission as a university of and for Tasmania;
- extensive student support offering numerous initiatives such as the University College model to support students from non-traditional backgrounds to succeed in higher education; and
- a sound commitment to continuous improvement of learning, teaching and research activities.
TEQSA has also outlined areas which require further focus with two conditions, which are:
- improved management of attrition, including better reporting of student outcomes to Academic Senate and, therefore, to University Council; and
- a need for a more effective policy framework within the University.
“The issues that TEQSA has highlighted are ones that we had identified as part of our strategic review last year,” Professor Long said.
“We are currently delivering a response to these things and we welcome the additional focus that TEQSA’s conditions bring to our efforts.
“Importantly, I would like to acknowledge the work of our staff, the academic Colleges and central units who helped prepare our re-registration submission.
“It was a fantastic team effort stretching well over three years of planning and preparation.”
The University of Tasmania’s registration details are listed on the National Register of Higher Education Providers.
