The Bureau of Meteorology has numerous flood warnings current across eastern New South Wales, with warnings for severe weather, severe thunderstorms and hazardous surf also in place.
Severe thunderstorms over the northeast are expected to bring locally heavy to intense rain on Monday, and possibly damaging wind and hail. This may result in further flooding and delay recovery efforts. Storms are expected to continue until at least Wednesday.
Rain is expected to continue today along the coast and ranges, from the Mid North Coast through to the South Coast.
Communities along the New South Wales coast, including Sydney, Blue Mountains, Illawarra-Shoalhaven and the South Coast regions, are likely to experience increased rainfall and wind overnight and on Tuesday as an east coast low develops near the coast. Rain is expected to begin easing early on Wednesday as the east coast low moves offshore.
Due to recent rainfall, soils are saturated and rivers swollen, so severe thunderstorms and persistent showers are more likely than usual to lead to landslides, flash and riverine flooding. Gusty winds are also more likely to lead to trees falling, due to the soft soils.
A damaging southerly swell may cause coastal erosion on Tuesday or early Wednesday for parts of southern New South Wales.
