Our catenary lights in central Geelong are set to mark a number of important dates this month.
The colours of the overhead illumination feature, at the corner of Malop and Moorabool streets, will glow different hues to shine a light on special causes and celebrations.
The City of Greater Geelong will join other cities across the country, and the world, in supporting the following occasions:
- Friday 8 May – blue (teal) – for World Ovarian Cancer Day. Each year, more than 1,600 women in Australia will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer, the deadliest of women’s cancer. There is no early detection test for ovarian cancer, which means women are being diagnosed late. Knowing the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer are a women’s best chance of early detection.
- Sunday 10 May – pink – to celebrate Mother’s Day.
- Sunday 17 May – rainbow – for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHoBIT).
- Wednesday 20 May – orange – for Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day, which acknowledges the national day of support for our SES volunteers.
- Friday 22 May – red – to support 65 Roses Day, which raises awareness of cystic fibrosis. This incurable life-limiting condition affects almost 3,500 Australians and impacts the whole body, primarily the lungs, airways and digestive system.
- The light sequences are programmed to take place from 6.30pm to midnight on the respective dates.

While we continue to follow physical distancing and social gathering advice from government authorities, this is council’s way of marking these important occasions on the community’s behalf.
