Shinju Matsuri support renewed for another three years

  • McGowan Government renews sponsorship of Shinju Matsuri festival for three years
  • 16-day festival celebrates Kimberley region’s cultural diversity and pearling history
  • Tickets now on sale for 2022 festival from August 20 to September 4  
  • The West Kimberley’s premier cultural celebration, Shinju Matsuri – Festival of the Pearl, has secured McGowan Government sponsorship for another three years until 2024.

    The Shinju Matsuri festival showcases the Kimberley region’s rich cultural diversity, unique pearling history, vibrant community and extraordinary natural landscapes.

    The 16-day festival has continued to grow in popularity, with last year’s event attracting almost 2,000 visitors to Broome and generating more than $7.4 million in economic impact for the region.

    This year’s program will feature more than 50 events and activities, including the Sunset Long Table Dinner, Floating Lantern Matsuri, Jetty Dining experience, Chinatown Feast, the Pearl Meat Cook-Off, and a ‘festival hub’ at Town Beach.

    The festival is supported by the State Government through Tourism Western Australia’s Regional Events Program.

    As stated by Tourism Minister Roger Cook:

    “The much-loved Shinju Matsuri festival continues to draw thousands of visitors each year, providing a big boost to the local economy.

    “Now in its 52nd year, we’re proud to announce a further three-year sponsorship agreement to support this iconic cultural event.

    “Events such as Shinju Matsuri attract visitors to our regions, while supporting the area’s tourism operators, accommodation providers and other local businesses.”

    As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

    “Shinju Matsuri is a highlight of our State’s tourism calendar, attracting thousands of visitors from near and far to enjoy the colour, taste, excitement and culture of this unique Kimberley festival.

    “This funding commitment will provide surety for the Festival of the Pearl to continue to grow and thrive, boosting tourism not only during the event but also inviting visitors to linger and return.

    “This investment reflects our Government’s ongoing support for a myriad of regional events –  from the Kimberley to the South Coast – all of which generate enduring flow-on benefits to local businesses, economies and communities.”

    As stated by Kimberley MLA Davina D’Anna:

    “It is fantastic news for Broome and the West Kimberley that the festival sponsorship has been renewed for a further three years.

    “Shinju Matsuri is one of the most exciting and vibrant festivals in WA.”
