Adelaide Town Hall celebrates 30th anniversary of the grand city organ with launch of new Virtual Organ Concert Series.

Seven local South Australian Organists will perform in a special virtual concert series to celebrate 30 years since the installation of the iconic J W Walker organ at Adelaide Town Hall, recognised as one of the largest and most powerful mechanical instruments in the Southern Hemisphere.

Starting today, the 30th Anniversary Virtual Organ Concert Series will be streamed via the Adelaide Town Hall’s Facebook page for all to enjoy, free of charge. Seven concerts in total will be streamed, two weeks apart.

Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said international, national and local organists relish the opportunity to play the magnificent instrument and that, despite the pandemic, its music deserves to be celebrated and enjoyed.

“While large audiences can’t come to the Adelaide Town Hall, Council is bringing the music to you,” said the Lord Mayor.

“The music program for this special online series is simply spectacular, including well-known movie scores from Star Wars and James Bond, as well as beautiful organ classics, there’s something for everyone.

“The program will even feature a piece that was played at our first ever organ concert held in 1877, which is a great tribute to the original town hall organ, which now resides in Tanunda at the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall.”
