Plans to revitalise the former Beaconsfield TAFE site have marked a key milestone, with the State Government, through DevelopmentWA, lodging the Local Structure Plan (LSP) with the City of Fremantle.
The plan for the 3.8 hectare site has now been released by the City for public comment.
The 42-day public comment period will be managed by the City of Fremantle and will give Western Australians the opportunity to review DevelopmentWA’s LSP, which sets out the design and planning framework for redevelopment of the site.
The LSP is based on a draft redevelopment Concept Plan, which was subject to a detailed community consultation process undertaken by DevelopmentWA, which captured over 100 submissions within a three-week period.
Consideration was also given to the City of Fremantle’s ‘The Heart of Beaconsfield’ masterplan, which outlines a vision for the broader Beaconsfield area.
Feedback received by DevelopmentWA revealed community aspirations for the site included a focus on sustainability, new public open space, retention of mature trees and improved security and safety in the area.
The resulting draft Concept Plan prioritises a diverse range of dwelling options including social and affordable housing, as well as mature tree retention, community facilities and public open spaces. There is a focus on sustainability, featuring water-sensitive urban design and climate responsive building design.
A mix of social and affordable housing will be incorporated into the redevelopment, contributing to the State Government’s target to deliver 4,000 social dwellings as part of the State Government’s $2.6 billion investment in social housing and homeless measures.

“Our Government is using every lever we can to bolster the supply of social housing including through key revisualisation projects like the redevelopment of the former Beaconsfield TAFE.
“On completion, the redeveloped site is expected to deliver a medium density precinct comprising a mix of dwelling types, including low and mid-rise apartments and townhouses with a mix of social and affordable housing to be included.
“Community and stakeholder feedback has strongly informed the planning process throughout this project, ensuring the redevelopment is reflective of community needs and aspirations.
“The upcoming public comment period will provide further opportunity for the community to provide their feedback on this exciting project.”
