The NSW Government is deploying 15 SMART drumlines in waters off Kiama starting this week as part of its Shark Management Program.

SMART stands for Shark-Management-Alert-In-Real-Time.

SMART drumlines were trialled off Kiama in 2018 and consist of an anchor, two buoys and a satellite-linked GPS unit attached to a hook baited with one sea mullet.

The drumlines are set every morning 500 m offshore in 8-15 m of water and collected at the end of each day.

When an animal takes the bait it sends out an alert.

The local contractor then has 30 minutes to tag and release the shark or other animal.

The SMART drumlines are part of an increased surveillance and detection package, including tagged shark listening stations, drones and shark nets.
