South-West kids all smiles with paediatric dental surgery opening at Busselton Health Campus

  • First paediatric dental surgery patients treated at Busselton Health Campus
  • Service is the result of an extensive collaboration between the Child and Adolescent Health Service and WA Country Health Service
  • More than 300 young patients and their families are expected to benefit every year
  • Service establishment saves local families from travelling to Perth
  • South-West children will no longer need to travel to Perth for urgent care dental extractions with the commencement of paediatric dental surgery at Busselton Health Campus.

Under the clinical leadership of Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH), patients needing assessment and surgery on referral from their local dental care provider can now be seen in Busselton, removing the need to visit the metropolitan area.

The introduction of paediatric dental surgery to Busselton Health Campus was the result of extensive collaboration between the WA Country Health Service and the Child and Adolescent Health Service, with PCH providing extensive clinical training opportunities for Busselton’s day surgery and recovery teams.

It is expected the monthly service will double to fortnightly from January 2023, providing even more options for local families.

Paediatric dental surgery is the latest in the McGowan Government’s ongoing expansion of health services in the South-West to meet the evolving needs of the local community.

Since joint replacement surgery was added to the range of orthopaedic services at Busselton Health Campus in 2018, almost 1000 locals have been able to access this life-enhancing surgical procedure in their own community.

As stated by Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“This new surgical service will make it easier for South-West families to access urgent care dental extractions closer to home.

“We want all Western Australians to have access to world-class healthcare no matter where they live, and we are working hard to expand the range of surgical and other health services in our regions.

“Congratulations to everyone at Busselton Health Campus and PCH Dental Department on providing outstanding care to even more South-West residents.”

As stated by Member for the South-West Region Jackie Jarvis:

“The new paediatric dental surgery is a great addition to the world-class healthcare already being provided for the region at the Busselton Health Campus.

“It is yet another example of the McGowan Government’s commitment to healthcare services in our region.”
