Works to upgrade the Southlake BMX Club track at Croome Sporting Complex is complete and the facility is now set to reopen for public use.
The major upgrade included the resurfacing and sealing of the BMX track with a poly-aggregate material, a sustainable recycled plastic alternative to mineral aggregate often used in concrete, known as TrackSkin.
The BMX track, managed by Southlake BMX Club volunteers, previously required ongoing maintenance work due to damage from the elements and a high volume of users.
The new track surface will improve safety and minimise yearly maintenance costs by up to $10,000.
Southlake BMX Club received $16,000 of funding from Council and $20,000 from the NSW Office of Sport’s ‘Wollongong 2022 Legacy Partnership Program’ to deliver the $45,000 project.
Southlake Illawarra BMX Club built the BMX track in 1986 after Council allocated land for the facility. The club started racing there in 1987 and hosted the Australian Titles in 1989.
Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said that the works would provide much needed relief to the Southlake BMX Club volunteers.
“The popular facility is a great asset to the community with approximately 10,000 track users each year,” Cr Saliba said.
“The upgrade will alleviate strains on Southlake BMX Club resources to ensure they can continue providing a fun and safe facility track for all riders.
“I want to thank the NSW Office of Sport and Member for Kiama Gareth Ward’s funding support and assistance,” she said.
Member for Kiama Gareth Ward said he was delighted the funding had made such a difference, and that the Southlake BMX Club track riders would be able to once again enjoy this great facility with the upgrades now completed.
