Budding poets and lyricists are invited to take the stage for the regional heat of the popular Australian Poetry Slam (APS) at Kempsey Shire Library on Thursday, 8 August.
Co-hosted by past winners Jesse Oliver (2017 Australian Poetry Slam Adult Champion) and Emily Crocker (2016 Rumble Youth Slam winner), the heat is a live literary performance program judged by the audience.
Kempsey Shire Council Librarian, Yvette McAlister, said participants will be given a microphone, a live audience and just two minutes to impress the judges with their original spoken poetry, hip-hop, stories or other word creations.
“The two highest scoring slammers from the Kempsey Poetry Slam heat will be selected to perform at the NSW Final in Sydney later this year during Story-Fest ’19,” she said.
“Two wordsmiths from each state and territory then head to the Australian Poetry Slam National Final at the Sydney Opera House the following day.”
Each year, more than 1,000 spoken word artists perform in more than60 APS heats for an audience of 20,000 across the Asia-Pacific.
Only 20 competitor spots are available for the Kempsey heat which is open to participants of all ages, cultural background or education.
Registrations for the Poetry Slam Heat will open at 4:30pm before the performance gets underway at 5pm in the library.
