Spring is here again. It’s that time of year where the combination of rain and sunshine means the grass grows faster than we can cut it.
Each year, Yarra Ranges Council removes vegetation and grass that could become fuel in a grass or bush fire.
While grass is green and the moisture content of the ground is high, fire risk is reduced. Mowing the grass on the roadsides and in the bushland areas too early in the season means it is more likely to regrow and then dry out later when the fire risk is higher – making the timing of each mow very important.
Following the wettest August on record, the ground conditions limit where we can mow.
We often need a few days of dry weather before we can access sites, and the small window available between rain events does not always allow enough time to cut all of our open spaces.
As soon as we can safely access the sites on our program, mowing will get underway.
