Stabbing at Smithfield Plains, South Australia

A woman is in hospital following a stabbing at Smithfield Plains this afternoon.

About 5.15pm on Saturday 25 December, police were called to Ballard Road at Smithfield Plains after reports of a stabbing.

A 29-year-old woman received a stab wound to her arm and chest. She was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

Northern District patrols quickly set up cordons but were unable to locate the offender.

A knife suspected to have been used in the assault was located on nearby Hoole Street.

About two hours later a man was located in a public toilet at a fast food restaurant on Curtis Road at Munno Para with self-inflicted injuries. Police will allege the man left the restaurant and ran on to the road into oncoming traffic.

Police located an Andrews Farm man and he was taken by SA Ambulance Service to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he will undergo a mental health assessment.

Following an investigation, the 32-year-old man from Andrews Farm, is the suspect for the earlier stabbing. He is likely to be charged with attempted murder.

Police wish to reassure the local community that this was not a random incident and both parties are known to each other.
