The first stage of the transformative $22 million Roe Street Enhancement has now been completed and is ready to be enjoyed by motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
The project is part of the $1.5 billion City Deal, a joint agreement between the Australian Government, Western Australian Government and the City of Perth, and complements the Perth City Link development, further reconnecting the CBD with Northbridge.
Stage 1 of the enhancement project – the eastern end of Stirling Street to Beaufort Street – includes a number of safety features for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists including wider footpaths, protected uni-directional cycle lanes, tree plantings, street lighting, paving and street furniture.
A narrower street will also encourage lower vehicle speeds.
Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the upgrade will help enhance the liveability and sustainability of the city for residents and visitors.
“The Perth City Deal demonstrates how three levels of government can work together effectively to deliver critical community infrastructure,” Minister Fletcher said.
“The Morrison Government’s record spending on infrastructure, including our investment in the $1.5 billion Perth City Deal, is central to our plan to drive Australia’s world-leading economic recovery.”
Western Australian Minister for Transport, Planning and Ports, the Hon Rita Saffioti MLA, said the Roe Street revitalisation project would encourage more people to walk and cycle throughout the Perth CBD.
“We have a strong focus on active transport and are working to upgrade and fill gaps in our walking and cycling network across the Perth CBD and the broader Perth area.
“The Roe Street revitalisation project is a key part of the Perth City Deal and complements other major cycling infrastructure projects such as the Swan River Causeway Bridge.”
City of Perth Lord Mayor, Basil Zempilas, said he appreciated the patience and support from local businesses, commuters and pedestrians while the works were being completed.
“This redevelopment will look fantastic when complete and will enhance the neighbourhood and be of enormous benefit to everyone who uses this street,” Mr Zempilas said.
“When completed, Roe Street – one of Perth’s oldest – will be transformed from a car-dominant corridor to a vibrant city destination.”
All stages of the project are scheduled to be completed in spring 2022.
This project forms part of the Perth City Deal CBD Transport Plan. The Australian and Western Australian Governments are each contributing $5 million to the Roe Street Enhancement project, with the City of Perth contributing $12 million.
