While journalist Stan Grant is familiar to most Australians, some of you may not know about the legendary work of his father Stan Grant Senior, to preserve the Wiradjuri language.
Stan Grant called into the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) recently to take a look the comprehensive Wiradjuri language collection that has been his Dad’s life work.
In collaboration with linguist John Rudder, Stan Grant Senior has worked tirelessly for more than three decades to initiate and facilitate the revival of the Wiradjuri language. They have produced many resources from children’s books to university texts.
‘It’s a great experience to see this here all in one place at AIATSIS where it is going to be protected, preserved and shared with others,’ Stan Grant said of his father’s work during his recent visit to AIATSIS in Canberra.
‘It’s fantastic to be here and see that connection between the history and what Dad’s being doing over the last 30 years.
‘This is a living, breathing, changing language (Wiradjuri). The people who are here today who can speak this language are directly connected to the people who have spoken this language for thousands of years.’
