A new capsule exhibition featuring sculptures, jewellery and ceramics from the State Art Collection will visit regional audiences across Western Australia from 2020.
There Were Moments of Transformation will present works by eminent international artists including Auguste Rodin, Pierre August Renoir, William Kentridge as well as WA artists Lucy Yukenbarri and Bethany Linton.
Local galleries in Katanning, Geraldton, Carnarvon and Collie will present the exhibition together with community engagement activities such as artist talks and workshops for children and family. Further galleries taking part will be announced soon.
There Were Moments of Transformation is a part of the Freighting Ideas project, which connects regional audiences with the State’s art collection and encourages local communities to participate in broader conversations about art.
The first exhibition from the project How Did I Get Here? is currently touring across WA, opening at the Ningaloo Centre in Exmouth tonight and continuing until October 13, 2019. The exhibition has been presented at Katanning and Collie and will visit Bunbury, Geraldton, Carnarvon and East Pilbara next year.
The Freighting Ideas project also assists galleries to build capacity for presenting diverse exhibitions with art handling training – producing upskilled staff and volunteers, and a galleries improvement fund which has provided them with much-needed upgrades. Through this fund, the Ningaloo Centre received more than $20,000 to install moveable walls – allowing bespoke spaces to be created depending on exhibition needs.
This project has been funded by the McGowan Government’s $8 million Regional Exhibition Touring Boost. It is delivered by ART ON THE MOVE and AGWA, and is managed by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries with funding support from the Royalties for Regions program.
As stated by Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:

“We are also building the capacity for regional galleries to present more diverse exhibitions in the future.”
