State Memorial Service for Honourable Jane Mathews AO

The family of the Honourable Jane Mathews AO, the first woman appointed a judge of a NSW court, has accepted the Premier’s offer of a State Memorial Service.

Born in Wollongong, Justice Mathews passed away last month (Aug 31) aged 78.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said Justice Mathews has left an indelible mark on our State’s legal profession, paving the way for women who have followed in her path.

“On behalf of the people of NSW, I extend my deepest sympathies to Justice Mathews’ family,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“She was intelligent, down-to-earth and highly respected in the legal profession.”

Justice Mathews was sworn in as a District Court judge in 1980, aged 39. Seven years later she was appointed to the NSW Supreme Court.

She founded the Australian Association of Women Judges, later becoming the head of the International Association; was a Justice of the Federal Court of Australia; and was an Acting Justice on the NSW Supreme Court bench until she retired in 2018.

Details of the State Memorial Service will be provided in the coming days.
