Statement From Deputy Premier 3 July

Deputy Premier, Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning and Minister for Industrial Relations The Honourable Jarrod Bleijie

The Crisafulli Government acknowledges the distinguished record of service of Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Director-General John Sosso, who has announced he will cease full time duties on 10 July due to health reasons.

Mr Sosso has been instrumental in implementing the important work of the Crisafulli Government, driving critical reforms including:

  • Reshaping Queensland’s planning and development system and unlocking housing development to address supply shortages;
  • The implementation of the 2032 Delivery Plan for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, encompassing the new stadium at Victoria Park;
  • Industrial relations and construction productivity reforms repealing BPIC laws and commencing the Commission of Inquiry into the CFMEU; and
  • Fast-tracking major projects, economic development and investment, particularly in critical minerals, resources, and defence manufacturing.

Mr Sosso has made a remarkable contribution to public administration in a career that commenced in 1984 when he joined the Policy and Legislation Branch of the Department of Justice.

Since that time he has served in many roles under both sides of politics including the Director-General of the Department of Justice, the Department of Consumer Affairs and Deputy Director General in the Department of Premier and Cabinet. He was a Member and Deputy President of the National Native Title Tribunal between 2000 and 2012 and served on the Commonwealth Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

In recognising over forty years of public service, I pay tribute to John’s unwavering commitment, his leadership and his contribution to the economic and social development of Queensland.

Current Deputy Director-General, State Development Shaun Ferris will serve as Acting Director-General in the interim.
