Statement On White Island Tragedy

  • Minister for Health

The Federal Government has activated a repatriation plan to bring a number of Australians injured in the White Island volcano tragedy from New Zealand to Australia for specialist medical care.

The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services and Ambulance Victoria are working closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and New Zealand authorities to enable the repatriations and stand ready to assist further when required.

Our focus is on ensuring the best clinical care for those injured, and support for their immediate family during this difficult time.

At this stage one patient is being transferred to the Victorian Alfred Hospital burns unit. They arrived in Victoria this morning.

Our thoughts are with all the families and first responders who have been impacted by this devastating event.
