The Greens (WA) strongly oppose the proposal to mine for sand in one of WA’s most pristine, biodiverse, and culturally significant coastal spots.
The proposal to mine more than 450k cubic metres of sand from a 9ha parcel of land will require mobile screening, internal haul roads, intense and constant truck movements, water use for dust suppression, drainage controls, and bund construction.
This development will scar this precious place and landscape forever, and must be rejected.
Injidup and Wyadup are not just beloved places to visit on holiday, they hold deep cultural significance and knowledge for Wardandi people, and must be protected from extractive industries at all costs.
The Greens (WA) wholeheartedly back calls made by Wardandi Custodians, community leaders, local residents, and experts in geology, cultural heritage, and health to reject this proposal.
We encourage the community to have their voices heard by making a submission to the City of Busselton by this Friday.
As stated by Jess Beckerling MLC:
“A proposal for a development of this scale, in a location as beloved as Injidup is outrageous and it should be rejected in its entirety.”
“The proposal poses an unacceptable threat to nature, to the local community’s health and wellbeing, and to the irreplaceable Aboriginal Cultural Heritage that has existed here for millennia.”
“I echo the community’s call on the City of Busselton and Regional Development Assessment Panel to wholly reject this proposal and urge the City and the State Government to properly protect the area from any future development, so this can never happen again.”
As stated by Dr Brad Pettitt MLC:
“Everything about this proposed sand mine is wrong from a planning and road safety perspective, from a tourism perspective and especially from an environmental and cultural perspective.”
“What we are talking about here is not a mine for anything precious or critical for future technology, but a mine for sand, the base material for construction.”
“It is absolutely outrageous that a proposal like this would even be considered along Caves Road and in such close proximity to Injidup and Wyadup, and I call on the City of Busselton to make the right call here and reject it.”
