The Cook Labor Government is continuing to invest in regional racing across Western Australia, with upgrades at Carnarvon Race Club helping create local jobs, boost tourism and secure the long-term future of racing in the Gascoyne.
The first stage of a $455,000 investment has now been completed through the Cook Labor Government’s $25.2 million Regional Racing Infrastructure Fund (RRIF), with improvements delivered ahead of this year’s Carnarvon Cup.
In March, a $100,000 resurfacing of the venue’s main track was completed, improving the quality and safety of racing conditions. A further $40,000 was invested in a new track conditioning machine to help maintain the track to a high standard throughout the racing season.
An additional $315,000 has been allocated for future works, ensuring the club can continue to modernise its facilities and support the long-term sustainability of racing in the Gascoyne.
The upgrades form part of the Cook Labor Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening regional racing infrastructure, supporting local employment and creating opportunities for regional communities to grow and prosper.
Established in 1883, Carnarvon Race Club is one of Western Australia’s oldest racing clubs and remains an important social and economic asset for the region.
The Carnarvon Cup, which is held on 12 September, is expected to attract strong crowds this weekend, showcasing the appeal of racing in the Gascoyne and delivering valuable benefits for local businesses, tourism operators and the wider regional economy.
The Carnarvon Race Club upgrades form part of a broader infrastructure program being delivered through the RRIF, with projects underway at 24 regional thoroughbred and harness racing venues across Western Australia.
As stated by Acting Racing and Gaming Minister Jackie Jarvis:
