Staying at home doesn’t have to = more rubbish

With more people at home due to COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, kerbside landfill volumes are increasing – 1,340 tonnes of Bayside’s waste went to landfill in the month of March alone!

Staying home doesn’t have to mean creating more waste. Here’s some ways you can avoid creating landfill:

  • Put the right thing in the right bin to minimise what ends up in landfill. Never bag recyclables – they may go straight to landfill. Find out what can go in each of your bins
  • Freeze perishable food to avoid it from going off and get creative with leftovers.
  • Compost your food waste or use Council’s food and green waste service to put your food scraps to good use. If you don’t have this service, sign up today
  • Pick up some extra compostable bags at your local supermarket if you are in danger of running out – look out for bags with the AS4736 logo.
  • Ditch single-use items such as paper towel and opt for washable cloths that can be laundered and re-used over and over again.
  • Recycle soft plastics via the REDcycle bin at your local participating supermarket. Soft plastics cannot recycled in your blue bin.
  • Create a shopping list and stick to it! This helps to save money as well as avoid unnecessary waste.

By adopting some or all of these tips you can help reduce the massive volume of waste going to landfill.

Waste and recycling collection services are continuing as normal during the COVID-19 pandemic however your bins may be emptied a little earlier than normal to allow the drivers to stagger their start times. Please place your bins out the night before your collection day.
