Staying Strong And Independent At 96

At 96, Audrey knows exactly where she wants to be – living independently in the Beaumaris home she loves.

Following a recent fall and hospital stay, Audrey needed some extra support to regain her strength, balance and confidence.

Bayside Care and Support physiotherapist Gabi is helping her do just that, with physiotherapy delivered in the comfort and familiarity of Audrey’s own home. “I’m not going anywhere else,” Audrey said.

When Gabi first visited Audrey following her fall, she could see the impact it had had on both her mobility and confidence.

“When I first saw Audrey after the fall, she was holding on a lot more to get up and down from the chair,” Gabi said.

“She’s gained more confidence in that time, just knowing that she can.”

Gabi developed an individualised physiotherapy program around Audrey’s needs and what matters most to her – maintaining her mobility and independence so she can continue living safely at home.

The exercises focus on building strength and balance and supporting Audrey with the everyday movements that help her remain independent.

For Audrey, they have become an important part of her routine. “I’d be lost without them. I can’t be sitting down all day doing nothing,” she said.

Personalised service Audrey’s experience reflects the personalised approach of Bayside Care and Support’s physiotherapy service.

Physiotherapy can support older people to improve or maintain their strength, mobility and balance, reduce their risk of falls, rebuild confidence following illness or a hospital stay, and continue doing the everyday things that are important to them.

For Audrey, who is blind, physiotherapy is one part of the support that helps her remain at home.

She also receives morning and evening assistance through Bayside Care and Support. Maintaining her independence is about much more than simply staying physically active.

It means continuing to feel connected to her home, her community and the life happening around her.

“You can hear what’s going on,” Audrey said. “All those sorts of things, to me, they’re essential because it means that you’re still living and everything’s still alive and so are you.”

With regular support at home, Gabi helping her maintain her strength and balance, and family around her, Audrey can keep living independently in the home and community she knows.
