The newly upgraded roundabout at the intersection of Isabella and Primrose Streets in Wingham opened to traffic on Thursday 5 November, following extensive reconstruction works.
MidCoast Council has completed the upgrade to improve the strength and condition of the road, address ongoing maintenance issues and provide a safer, more reliable intersection for motorists.
The project involved relocating water pipes, upgrading drainage and reconstructing the road pavement, kerbs and footpaths.
Additional improvements include new street lighting, line marking, signage, landscaping and trees.
MidCoast Council’s Director Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott said the completion of the project was a positive outcome for the Wingham community.
“This roundabout has experienced ongoing pavement failures over the years, so it was important that we addressed the underlying issues rather than simply repairing the road surface,” Mr Scott said.
“We’ve undertaken extensive work below the road surface to strengthen the pavement and improve drainage. We’ve also removed old pipes, poles and other debris that were weakening the old road.
“The result is a much-improved intersection that will provide a safer and more reliable road for the community well into the future.”
The project was funded by MidCoast Council and delivered within budget. Unforeseen drainage and utility issues, along with wet weather, contributed to a short delay in completion.
During the final line marking works, pedestrian crossing markings were incorrectly installed on the eastern side of the roundabout.
These markings have been blacked out, and Council will continue working with the contractor to determine a more permanent solution to rectify the error.
Mr Scott thanked local businesses, residents and motorists for their patience while the intersection was closed for construction.
“We know these works have caused some disruption, particularly for nearby businesses and people travelling through Wingham, and we appreciate everyone’s understanding while we delivered these important improvements,” he said.
