More families are switching to reusable nappies, period and sanitary products to reduce their waste under the City of Ballarat’s rebate program.
The City of Ballarat’s reusable nappy, period and sanitary products rebate is receiving a strong uptake from the community.
As of Friday 11 November, there were 671 applications for the rebate with $30,025.52 provided in rebates.
At the 28 September Council meeting, the six-month trial for the program, which began on 1 March 2022 with a budget of $30,000, was extended until the end of the 2022/23 financial year, with an additional $30,000 added to the program.
The rebate provides a financial incentive to help households reduce their waste.
Residents can now apply for 50 per cent of the purchase price, of up to $100, for reusable cloth nappy products, reusable period and sanitary products, and for reusable breast pads. The program allows for one application for each product type per household.
When applying for the rebate, residents will need to supply a copy of their receipt and proof of residence such as a rates notice, drivers’ licence, utility bill or other documentation with their address.
Applications can be made online at ballarat.vic.gov.au/reusable-rebate or at The Phoenix Customer Service on Armstrong Street South. Successful applicants will have the rebate transferred to their bank account within 21 days of the application being approved.
City of Ballarat Deputy Mayor, Cr Amy Johnson said the rebate program continues to support families to make more sustainable choices.
“It is great to see so many families giving reusable products a go,” she said.
“The City of Ballarat is committed to achieving zero waste to landfill and this rebate program is one way we can support our community to move to reusable products and reduce their waste.”
Reusable nappies include cloth nappies, reusable swim nappies, reusable training nappies, reusable inner liner for nappies, reusable wet bags, and reusable wipes for cloth nappy use.
Reusable period products include reusable period pads, period proof bathers, leak proof underwear, and period cups.
Reusable breast pads include reusable maternity breast pads.
