University students living on Tasmania’s West Coast now have access to a new study hub with computing facilities, study spaces and academic support opportunities.
Member for Braddon, Gavin Pearce, today officially launched the West Coast Heritage Regional Study Hub in Zeehan.
The hub offers modern IT equipment, including video conferencing, internet access, study rooms, learning areas, and a network of fellow students.
Mr Pearce said the Morrison Government’s $2.52 million investment in the hub will give local students greater choice and access to opportunities.
“The hub will offer academic support for our local students studying by distance from any Australian university,” Mr Pearce said.
“This will benefit Tasmania’s students and families by enabling them to access quality education opportunities without having to travel long distances from home, and means we can retain the skills and experience that will boost Tasmania’s economy and ensure our West Coast communities flourish.”
Minister for Education Dan Tehan said the Australian Government is investing in regional and remote education.
“Young Australians living in regional areas are half as likely to have a university level qualification as those living in cities and our Government is addressing this inequality by improving access to higher education in areas like Tasmania,” Mr Tehan said.
“The Morrison Government has committed $39 million to establish Regional Study Hubs in over 23 locations across regional Australia – including in Zeehan – so that more regional students have more opportunities to study in their local communities.”
