Successful Climate Research Grants recipients

Peter Gutwein,Premier & Minister for Climate Change

The Tasmanian Liberal Government understands that while we continue to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, we also need to continue innovating and investing to support our long-term recovery.

Today I am pleased to announce the successful recipients of the Tasmanian Government’s Climate Research Grants Program.

We are providing $750,000 towards 16 research projects to improve our understanding of our future climate so we can better manage the risks, and capture the opportunities.

The funding is expected to support $1.4 million in climate research and builds on our world class capability at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies, UTAS and CSIRO.

The Climate Research Grants Program will support Tasmanian businesses, industry and the community, through research on key risks and opportunities for industries, biosecurity, bushfires and health impacts.

Specific research projects include:

  • Marine heatwave risks on aquaculture by IMAS
  • Carbon reduction strategies by Dairy Tas
  • Fire regime modellings for planned burning by UTAS
  • Tasmania’s future as a carbon neutral destination by the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania

Tasmania is a world leader in climate change action and we have achieved our target of net zero emissions four years in a row. These research projects will help us to maintain our leadership.
