The new $6.75 million investment will provide suicide prevention services to support individuals and families in regional communities.
Fifteen full-time specialist counsellors will work across regional NSW to provide support to anyone who is impacted by or thinking about suicide.
The first two specialist counsellors will provide services in the Eurobodalla and Snowy Mountains regions.
The specialist counsellors are part of the Premier’s Priority of Towards zero suicides. The priority will invest $87 million over three years in new suicide prevention initiatives.
NSW Mental Health Minister Bronnie Taylor said the relatively high rates of suicide in rural areas are devastating families and communities.
“Many factors can contribute to suicide, from domestic violence, to relationship issues or unemployment, to stress and hardship,” Mrs Taylor said.
“Support is available, all you need to do is pick up the phone and make an appointment by calling the NSW Mental Health Line.”
