Education Minister Grace Grace has today met with prospective students of the new state secondary school being built Caloundra South.
Ms Grace said the new school was part of a record $1.464 billion state school infrastructure spend included in the Palaszczuk Government 2019-20 State Budget. Almost $300 million will be spent at schools across the Sunshine Coast alone in the next 12 months. A new primary school and a new secondary school will also be built at Palmview.
“Students currently in Year 5 at nearby primary schools may find themselves making history as members of the foundation Year 7 class of the new school when it opens in 2021,” Ms Grace said.
“This is an exciting project for the Caloundra South community, however the Palaszczuk Government is also investing tens-of-millions of dollars ensuring established schools can continue to keep pace with strong enrolment demand.
“Another important benefit of the government’s massive education infrastructure budget is the jobs it will support in the building industry. The new $115 million secondary school at Caloundra South is expected to support more than 330 jobs during construction.”
Ms Grace said other key projects at Sunshine Coast schools funded in the budget included seven new classrooms at Maroochydore State High School, enhanced STEM learning spaces at Woodford State School, and 13 new classrooms and an extension to the music block at Sunshine Beach State High School.
“Eumundi State School is receiving eight new classrooms, while Bli Bli State School’s tennis courts will be refurbished in a $150,000 project,” Ms Grace said.
“It’s also fantastic to see infrastructure for growing schools in the Kawana electorate receive funding, with schools like Buddina State School receiving $3 million for four new classrooms.
“The Palaszczuk Government wants every Queensland child, wherever they live, to get a great start to life by receiving a world-class education.”
Ms Grace also said the budget would include increased funding of $100 million over four years for priority state school air conditioning projects which, including existing investment, will bring total funding to $191 million over five years.
“This will include urgent replacement of air-conditioning units in schools in the Cooler Schools Zone and other priority school air-conditioning projects as identified through a review of state school air-conditioning needs,” she said.
