Critical incident declared after man dies following cross border pursuit

A critical incident investigation is underway after a man died in a car following a pursuit near the northern NSW border this morning.

About 1am (Sunday 19 July 2026) NSW Police received a report from Queensland Police Service that a man – armed with a firearm – had driven across the border into NSW following a pursuit.

NSW Police commenced a search of the area before locating the man driving a Ford utility on Sexton Hill Drive, Banora Point.

Officers directed the man to stop; however, he failed to do so, and a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued through multiple nearby suburbs before road spikes were successfully deployed against the Ford twice in South Murwillumbah.

The man continued to drive from police until finally stopping down an embankment on Kyogle Road, Kunghur, about 26km south-west of Murwillumbah, about 2am today.

Police established a perimeter around the Ford before Police Negotiators were deployed to speak to the man; however, as police approached the vehicle they found the driver unconscious.

Officers immediately commenced CPR on the man; however, he died at the scene.

He is yet to formally identified; however, is believed to be a 25-year-old man from Queensland.

Police have established a crime scene, seizing a firearm from the vehicle for forensic examination.

A critical incident team from Richmond Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and a report will be prepared for the information of the NSW Coroner.

The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
